Singing bird automaton pops up in Brighton
I valued this beautiful late 19th century Austrian singing bird box automaton last year for probate and have now been asked to sell it on behalf of the beneficiaries.
It is made of silver gilt and is ornately and finely decorated with wirework decoration and cloisonné enamel birds and flowers and gem set with coloured stones and pearls. It stands on four unusual dragon feet and is housed in a fitted case.
There is a sliding bird catch at the front and when pushed to the right the oval panel on the lid pops up and a moving feathered bird comes into view. Hidden bellows within the mechanism of the box produce a chirping sound that gives the impression that the bird is singing. I have entered into an auction on October 3rd with a guide price of £1800 – 2200.
