Silver Valuation
At Nicholas Muston we can handle everything on your behalf from the identification and valuation of your silver through to the eventual sale. All of our valuers are RICS accredited.
Antique, arts and crafts and contemporary silver are all strong collector’s fields. We can advise on the correct route to sale, helping you achieve the very highest price.

We can undertake a silver valuation anywhere in the country for sale, probate and insurance purposes.
As a company we are regularly appointed by solicitors to undertake silver valuations for probate purposes. We are also instructed by some of the largest insurance companies to value collections of silver and jewellery for their high net worth clients.
If you are considering selling silver by one of the great 18th century Huguenots like Paul de Lamerie, the Regency master Benjamin Smith, an arts and crafts piece by Omar Ramsden or the contemporary silversmith Gerald Benney, then we can advise you.
Some collectors focus on pieces bearing rare British assay office marks which is one of the components that make up the collection of punches referred to as the hallmarks. These are a series of marked punches onto the item of silver which include the quality standard, date letter, maker’s mark and assay town. The practice started circa 1300 and as a quality control standard is one of the oldest forms of consumer protection.
Condition is always an important valuation criteria when it comes to silver as some pieces might have been either repaired, enhanced or faked so it is important to have an experienced eye when appraising a piece.
If you are considering selling a collection of silver or even a single piece we can provide completely independent and professional advice.
As we work on a commission basis it is in our interest to achieve the very best price for our clients through our vast network of private collectors, dealers and auction rooms throughout the country.
If we broker a sale to a collector or dealer then we charge a 10% commission (no vat on top) on the price achieved. If we arrange the sale through an auction room then you are not charged anything extra, by way of commission, by the auctioneers but out of what they earn they pay us an introductory commission.
A lot of plain silver or flatware might be more suitable to sell to a bullion dealer. As we sell so much silver and gold, on behalf of our clients, we are paid the very highest price, generally this is about 20-25% higher than the general public will be offered but we only take a 10% commission (no vat) from the price achieved for this service, subject to a minimum charge of £50.
At Nicholas Muston we can handle everything on your behalf from the identification and valuation of your silver through to the eventual sale.
