Gold coins as an investment

The image shows a Queen Elizabeth II gold proof £5 coin struck in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee for 50 years on the throne. It was struck in 22ct gold by the Royal Mint and weighs 39.94 grams. A piece like this offers strong investment appeal blending intrinsic gold value with numismatic premium because of it’s rarity and collectability.

The dramatic rise in gold in the last two years has meant that prices for these £5 gold coins has increased from about £2000 in March 2024 to nearly £5000 in March 2026. Not only is this a fantastic return for any UK residents that have invested in Royal Mint produced gold, silver or platinum coins that are legal tender but when sold they are fully exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT).

This exemption covers sovereigns, Britannias and commemorative issues meaning investors can realise unlimited profits on these coins without any CGT liability.

By contrast foreign coins, gold bars, most shares and additional properties are subject to CGT, when sold above the annual allowance, making Royal Mint coins a highly attractive way to invest in gold.

Last year I brokered the sale of three exceptional collections of gold coins which totalled close to £800,000. I advised my clients where to sell the fine and rare coins and for the remainder, which was considered bullion, I negotiated the highest possible price for gold on the day of trading. This was well in excess of prices being quoted by all of the online bullion buying companies.

This was my favourite car at the London Concours at the Honourable Artillery Company. This is a Maserati 3500 GT from 1962 which resided for over 50 years in America before coming to this country in 2012.

I love these silver “Butterfield” type pocket sundials. I collected this very original example by the Paris maker Bion last week. It dates to the late 17th/early 18th century and is housed in its original fitted leather case.
As you can see it is beautifully engraved on the back and is in lovely condition overall.
I have guided it very realistically at £500-700 but hope it will do better.
