Buyer struck by Quentin Bell studio ceramic bowl

We have handled some fine studio pottery and ceramics over the years by Hans Coper, Lucie Rie, Edmund deWaal, Bernard Leach, Magdalene Odundo and William Staite Murray and just recently a small but beautiful collection by a less well known, but in my opinion, underrated potter called Quentin Bell.
His mother was Vanessa Bell and his aunt was Virginia Woolf so he grew up in very artistic and cultured surroundings. Principally he was an art historian and lecturer but also an artist and as can be seen a talented ceramicist.
One piece from the collection was this unusual but striking bowl decorated with Neptune embracing two mermaids. It is 10 inches in diameter and was made at the Fulham Pottery.
We were delighted to handle the sale of all the pieces, on behalf of our client, to a private collector.
